点评:This site is in a picturesque, off the beaten path and has an air of adventure. Spotting the subtle sign, we pulled in the long lane to the visitor's center. This center is packed with items - most of which are touristy. They also have a small food selection made by other communities and a book room.
We paid for the tour ($5) which was longer than advertised (a total of 1.5 hrs.). The volunteer guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. The tour goes through a garden and into the cloister - a quiet area. The order of monks is Trappist and so language is kept to a minimum.
The tour includes noon day prayers (less than ten minutes) and a tour of the church. No other buildings are included.
This is an important place as it was a historic plantation (the monks retain 3,500 acres of the original land grant) of quite important people in revolutionary times. More recently, the property was owned by the Luce family. Clare Booth Luce was the person who gifted the land to the diocese. There is nothing left of the original buildings.
In addition, there are other gardens characterized by brick work designs, a grave yard, and paths along the river. It is a beautiful and peaceful setting. This is a contemplative outing that may not be suitable for children.
