Unique place, know what to expect
云南石林地质公园的点评
点评：Not easy to access, pretty chaotic and definitely expensive, but in my opinion just worth it.
Access: a high speed train from kunming to shilin west station (shilinxi) and then bus 99 which waits at the station's entrance. This bus goes to the park bus terminal, which is still not the park but is located about 2.5 km away from the park main entrance, so that they can gain a few extra Yuans out of you by making you buy a ticket for the mini electric buggies (you can walk instead but walking on the road is no fun).
The park of course is one of the biggest tourist attractions around and it's always packed with the usual super loud groups, posers and stands. However, they're all concentrated only in what's called the major stone forest, which is also the developed and artificial part of the park. Once you keep going south you reach the "minor" one which is awesome, because it's just as beautiful, more natural, raw, adventurous and most importantly quiet and peaceful. Pass through super narrow openings and get to the mushroom rocks at the southern border of the area to have some great views of the karsts and some great breezes. The crazy rock formations all around makes it feel like a bit like outer space. At least when it's quiet.
Then return to the mayhem through sellers right at the exit that scream into your ears.... Not for everyone perhaps.
