点评:First, in cap letters, it is NOT 2.8 miles. It’s 17 miles.
Enough said. It’s 17 miles. Mahana Ridge Trail, once you set your foot on the trail, you have to complete the 17 miles round trip!
The signs were worn out. At several forks, we had to guess our way based on how fresh the trails look. thinking it’s a 2.8 miles trail, we kept charging ahead, thinking the next turn is going to be our rescue, and the arboretum is just around the corner.
Round and round we go: Started at 1130am, by 3pm, we barely made it to the famous lookout.
We were so worn out. I am starting to recall those news where people got lost on hiking trails in Maui and had to be rescued. It’s getting dark in the woods. The sign said arboretum ahead. Having trailed through the winding ridges, we knew there’s no way we could turn around and go back at 3pm and make it out of the woods.
Not wanting to get stuck in the woods calling 911 to rescue us, we decided to charge ahead. About another 3 miles, our eyes lit 🔥 up, there’s a pavilion! We dashed towards it.
Our passion and hope for a way out to end this 2.8-miles-turned-into-10-miles hiking were met with a hard cold iron gate. Apparently, the arboretum is no longer in service and had shut down.
Standing by the cold harsh iron gate, looking back at the 10 miles we trailed through, we knew there’s no way we would head back into the woods at 4pm, in our worn out shape.
The gate said, cameras surveillance active, violators will be prosecuted. Okay, do we want to get stuck in the woods and call 911 to rescue us, or do we want to climb over the gate and find out what the prosecution would be? My son summed it well, this is a live or die situation. We are not going back into that woods and that trail. Climbing the iron gate we are.
Finally, we made it to the Mahana golf course and called a Uber back to our resort.
This has been an unexpected adventure.
