点评:Geghard Monastery is an absolute must-visit when in Armenia. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s rich in history, stunning architecture, and an atmosphere that truly transports you to the medieval era.
I visited during winter, and what made my experience even more magical was that snow started falling on the way to the monastery and stopped right after we left. It felt surreal, adding to the mystical feel of the place. That said, I think Geghard Monastery would be breathtaking in any season.
The monastery is fortified by valleys, and as you approach, you’ll notice crosses carved high up on the mountains. I kept wondering—how did they even get up there? Ancient people were seriously impressive. Inside, you’ll find crosses carved into the rocks, showcasing the deep history and craftsmanship that make this site UNESCO-worthy.
One of the most incredible things I learned is that even though part of the monastery’s wall had collapsed, it was reconstructed using the same original materials, preserving its authenticity. It’s amazing how well this place has been maintained over the centuries.
Something I didn’t expect? The friendly stray cats! These cats are fluffy, chunky, and so affectionate. If you’re an animal lover, good luck trying to resist petting them!
Walking through the monastery feels like stepping back in time. Our guide told us that on Saturdays and weekends, weddings often take place here, and I was lucky enough to witness one! Imagine watching a traditional Armenian wedding inside a medieval monastery, while snow falls outside—it was such a surreal and unforgettable moment.
It’s Free & Full of Hidden Gems
• No entrance fee—so there’s no reason to miss this!
• Take your time exploring—don’t just rush in and out. The monastery and its surroundings deserve a slow, immersive visit.
• Try the natural spring water at the pulpulak (water fountain) outside. Armenia’s drinking water is incredibly pure, and honestly, it tastes better than Evian!
Geghard Monastery is one of the most beautiful and historically rich places I’ve visited. Whether you’re into medieval architecture, history, or just want to experience something unique, this place is truly a gem of Armenia. The combination of nature, history, and spirituality makes it unforgettable. Don’t skip this when visiting Armenia!
• 在室外的 pumpulak(喷泉)尝试一下天然泉水。
