点评：The volcano experience is very disappointing for all the money you spend getting there. There was a land slide in the caldera a few years ago which has significantly impacted the amount of lava and explosions you get to see. Yes, the volcano erupts a few times an hour but you can't actually see almost any lava. It was very different a few years ago. There's a lot of silence and/or dishonesty about this.
The other thing to be aware of is there are 4 viewing points around the caldera. Since the earthquake on Efate in December 2024, two of the viewing points are closed and are not likely to open anytime soon. This leaves you with two view points - the first one you can't see into the caldera at all, the second one you see basically a few red spots.
This disappointment wasn't only my experience, it was the experience of the 20 odd people who were on the sunset tour with us. There was a shocked silence amongst the group about how bad it was - people didn't want to admit or talk about how much money every person spent to get there to see basically, nothing.
If it was cheaper, sure. But for all the time and huge amounts of money it take to get there, absolutely not.
I'd almost go as far as saying it's a total tourist rip off. Actually, it is. It wasn't in the past, but now it is.
I liked Tanna and I liked the people in the village who I stayed with. I know this sort of a review is going to negatively impact them as tourism is an important source of income for their families. But I also think it's fair to share my experience because it costs upwards of $700 AUD per person (and that's doing it on a cheap independent budget flying from Efate to Tanna on Air Vanuatu) which is A LOT of money for a lot of people to have a disappointing experience.
