Gorgeous stately home oozing old-fashioned atmosphere and charm

点评：While Mellerstain House is closed during the winter, the gardens and grounds are open to wander around. The cafe remains closed although helpfully the toilets are open! Check website for details as the house and cafe reopen in April. Mellerstain is a jaw-droppingly beautiful 18th Century stately mansion, designed by William and Robert Adam. The gardens are not the original ones but were created in 1910 in an Italianate terraced style leading down the lake. Scottish gardens in March have some limitations, so don’t expect colour and lush greenery. There are daffodils, yes, but focus instead on the bones of the gardens - the stonework, the clipped topiary, the fine trees and the way the gardens meld with the surrounding landscape of the Eildon Hills. It’s clear that the gardeners are working hard to prepare the gardens for the summer season. When we visited in mid-March, there was still quite a lot of clearing, mowing and weeding to be done, so don’t expect perfection. Also, there is a preponderance of herbaceous borders and rose bushes, so this garden is likely to be at its best from June to August. That said, this place has soul, charm and buckets of atmosphere. We particularly liked the Tea House garden, like something from a fairy tale. Like many other Borders stately homes, it breathes good taste and is a welcome antidote to commercial tourism.
