点评:The website and Wikipedia suggested a fairly modest museum, with a collection of post 1945 aircraft on display. Generally, the aircraft were outdoors, while other exhibits were under cover.
What set this museum apart were the guided tours (extra £3.50 per aircraft at time of visit). First tour - Avro Vulcan - huge Aeroplane, tiny crew compartment. After an external walk around, we went up the crew ladder into various crew seats where the various functions of the crew and their activities were explained by our guide. We probably spent around 30 minutes inside the aircraft, the effects of 16 hours or more on crew can only be imagined - brave men indeed.
Next came the Hawker Siddeley Nimrod. Again, an external walk around first with explanation, then a more leisurely entry to the aircraft, where the functions of crew and equipment were detailed. Less claustrophobic than the Vulcan, long flights would still have been every bit as challenging for their crews in their own way.
The tours were definitely the stand-out feature of the visit, but that is not intended to denigrate the remainder of the museum. The internal displays were very well laid out. To see all the models, especially the larger ones, you need to look up into the rafters. The history of the base (now Norwich Airport) and those surrounding it is described in detail, covering both RAF & USAAF usage, aircraft, roles and activities. Another humbling touch was the display dedicated to the aerial recipients of the VC from this area. Lest we forget.
