One of the best downtowns in California!

点评：What an incredible hidden gem in southern California! Downtown Long Beach might not be for everyone, but if you want a walkable and bikable urban area right on the ocean, with perfect weather year-round, I can't think of many places in the US, or even southern California, that offer what Long Beach has. I love that it actually is very much a city, and not an artificial-feeling planned development (though areas around the Pike and Shoreline Village are there with major chains and retailers). There's clearly a lot of history here with beautiful old art deco buildings and I love all the local restaurants and bars along the Promenade, Pine, and 3rd. The East Village Arts District has a ton of cute boutique shops and cafes like Rose Park Roasters and ReCircle Home. I see people complaining about parking, but the public city garages always had spots and were free for the first 2 hours and very reasonable after. If you can score a free street parking spot, you're good for 3 days and may not ever have to move your car if you're just sticking to walking around downtown while you're there. There are also free shuttles around downtown and the queen mary or the free circuit routes to Retro Row or Belmont Shore. Share bikes and eScooters are abundant and easy to use. There are homeless around like any other city, but if you mind your business you should have no problems. I am a solo female traveler and didn't feel unsafe out at night. Bottom line: if you like cities, it's an amazing city with a great downtown and beach access; if you're just here for the beaches, you might not care for the city.
