点评:Best experience we had in Costa Rica, hands-down! This truly authentic glimpse into life on a family farm was informative and fun. La Casa del Alto is situated high in the mountains near San Isidro de Atenas. As we climbed from the village up a steep trail through the farm, the stunning views of the surrounding countryside just got better and better. Once at the casa, we learned the art of making tortillas from scratch, with hands-on opportunities at each step in the process. The tortillas were cooked slowly on a comal (metal griddle) over a wood fire. Lunch was an absolutely delicious plate of stewed chicken in an achiote broth, potatoes, rice and beans, pico de gallo and, of course, our very tasty homemade tortillas. It was capped off by a flavourful cup of coffee, freshly brewed with beans harvested from the farm.
Our guide was the granddaughter of the matriarch of the family. She was just a lovely person and clearly proud of her family, their farming traditions and their place in the community. She kindly sent us home with some leftover tortillas, carefully wrapped in a banana leaf. Thank you, Maciel, for making us feel so welcome!
