点评:We were visiting Great Basin National Park, enjoying some incredible night sky photography (and a tour of Lehman Cave—highly recommended!) when we decided to tackle Highway 50, famously dubbed “The Loneliest Road in America.” For us, the name alone was an open invitation. Living in Florida, where the landscape is lush and lively, we find the desert’s vastness pretty fascinating.
After a cozy night at Whispering Elms in Baker, NV (great spot if you’re in the area!), we set out westbound. We did our homework on what we might encounter, but of course, the surprises made it even better. Here’s a rundown of our stops—and some highlights we probably missed. Oh, and fellow tourists? Practically non-existent. For us Floridians, that was a delightful change!
Stop #1: The Ward Charcoal Ovens
These peculiar beehive-shaped structures were built in 1876 to convert local timber into charcoal for a silver smelter nearby. They only operated until 1879, but they’re still standing, and they’re a fantastic photo op. Don’t skip this one if you like historical oddities!
Stop #2: Elk Viewing Area
We didn’t actually spot any elk here (although a huge herd surprised us near Great Basin NP), but we found a well-kept parking area with clean bathrooms—a win in any traveler’s book. If you’re luckier than us, you might catch sight of the elusive elk!
Stop #3: Success Loop Road
Just 2-3 miles east of Ely, this scenic 33-mile loop takes you up over a mountain pass and down into the valley north of Ely. We took it in a rental SUV, no problem (though we imagine winter might tell a different story). The drive is slow, winding, and scenic—perfect for taking in the landscape. We encountered only one other car, so it truly felt like we had the road to ourselves.
Stop #4: Ely, NV
This is your last solid stop for supplies: hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, gas stations, and even a McDonald’s with free Wi-Fi. The railroad museum here is excellent, so if you’re a fan of trains, make a stop.
Stop #5: Garnet Hill
If you’re up for a bit of rock smashing, head over to Garnet Hill. Bring a hammer and start cracking rocks open—there’s garnet inside some of them! We did find a few, which made the stop worthwhile.
Stop #6: Eureka and Austin
Eureka is full of old, desert-worn buildings—perfect for photos. And in Austin, you can check out Stokes Castle, a strange and solitary stone structure with a unique history and a great view over the valley.
Stop #7: Hickison Petroglyph Recreation Area
Along the way, you’ll spot signs for the Hickison Petroglyph Recreation Area. It’s a quick detour to see ancient rock art—worth a stop if you’re into history and mystery. Keep your eyes open for the Shoe Tree and some quirky little diners and saloons along the way too!
Final Stop: Genoa Bar in Genoa, NV
We wrapped up our journey at the historic Genoa Bar, the oldest saloon in Nevada, established in 1853. This place has hosted everyone from Ulysses S. Grant to Teddy Roosevelt, John Wayne, and even Clint Eastwood. The list is long. Worth a visit.
Have the time? Give it a shot. We enjoyed the day.
