点评:Been here before - like 1 year before - and at that time it was a brief - yet interesting visit - so now when we did return to Bratislava , we've went again.
From the old town of Bratislava is fairly easy to get to the castle - a 15-20 min stroll , with a mild climb to get to the Sigismund gate. Now if you have any movement challenges I don't suggest this route since it does involve several steps to be climbed to reach the castle on "the top of the hill".
It was built starting from the IXth century and modified and expanded and got to this shape by the XVIIIth century. ( Now for sure it is not Schonbrunn, nor it is the Buda Castle hill - just to mention 2 buildings from 2 rivers that the Danube is passing through)... It was built by the Principality of Nitra - and the castle and the surrounding territory was under the Moravian kings.
In the middle ages the Kingdom of Hungary ruled the region ( from like 900 till the 1700 , ...different setups , it was the capital of Hungarians after the Ottoman empire occupied part of Hungary after the battle of Mohacs in 1526). The crown of Hungary was stored here - the castle has its "Crown tower" - where the holy crown of Hungary was kept under guard (1552 till 1784). ...
But enough with the history lesson ... the building has a very interesting past and it is in nice shape - and nowadays is home to the National Museum of Slovakia ... and even that at certain point in time ( recent times ) plans were made to demolish it , I'm glad that it was rebuilt and refurbished ... it is definitely a landmark of the Slovak capital and well worth visiting.
Entering on the premises is free of charge - you only need to pay to visit the museums ...
When in Bratislava , put it on the list of places to visit - it is worth it.
