点评:My wife and I had the privilege of being guided around this fascinating building by John, who was not only knowledgeable but also had a real love for the place.
The Stowe Trust has done some excellent work in restoring some of the rooms, and ironically one of its merits is the lack of furniture - it’s absence means there’s no distraction from the architecture and decorative work, which might otherwise be the case.
What’s also brilliant is that fact that the building is used by the school - it’s not a museum. These buildings weren’t meant to be museums - they were places full of boisterous life and no doubt frequently damaged (and of course altered at the whim of a wealthy owner). Buildings should be adapted and used.
Without Stowe School there probably wouldn’t be a building to enjoy - it would likely have gone the way of many others immediately after the War.
Thank you John for an excellent tour.
