点评:We had an excellent trip to Umbria thanks to Villaggio Tours and it’s founder – our host and guide – Liz Heath. Our base was a comfortable guest house, Bed e Basta, in the small medieval hill town of Allerona. Highlights included truffle hunting (the results of which we got to enjoy with our lunch!), a nature walk followed by a wonderful al fresco lunch featuring foraged ingredients, and a wonderful pasta and tiramisu cooking class with Liz’s mother-in-law Franca and sister-in-law Anna Rita. With local guide Lucianna we explored the ancient hill town of Orvieto, learned of its Etruscan past, and visited the spectacular Duomo. Also guided by Lucianna, we visited the spectacular, but crumbling hill town of Civita di Bagnoreggio that looked like a site that was CGI-generated for a sci-fi movie. We also visited the archaeological museum and recently-discovered ancient Etruscan and Roman baths at San Casciano dei Bagni, currently a significant archaeological site. We also enjoyed the geothermal Fonteverde Spa and visited a local winery whose cellar was an Etruscan cave. Back in Allerona, we had a private visit to Museo dei Cicli Geologici (geological museum) where we learned that Umbria, now landlocked, was once home to a large inland sea. Many fossils, including a whale skeleton, were on display. It was lovely to get to know Liz, Paolo, and their extended family while in Allerona.
Our trip concluded with three days in Rome. In addition to Liz, we were led by local guide and art historian Isa who showed us the Galleria Borghese and led us on a lovely early-morning walking tour of Rome that included the Trevi fountain and the Spanish steps. We were also able to see the amazing Caravaggio exhibition at the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica at Palazzo Barberini. With local guide Guido, we had a private tour of the excavations beneath the Basilica of Santa Maria di Maggiore. Good company and good food all around – a wonderful conclusion to our time in Italy!
