点评:Our visit to Rhode Island like the state itself started with Roger Williams. At the northern end of the historic area adjacent to the Capitol, is a nice park that was supposed to be original homestead property of Roger Williams. It is also the original site of the first two church buildings of the First Baptist Church of America at the corner of Smith and Main. In addition to the park and green space, there is a building dedicated to Williams and his life. Unfortunately, it was closed on Labor Day when we visited. Still, the National Memorial is where we park and began our 2 mile walking tour of Providence's colonial sites.
Still our party enjoyed walking the park and hearing about Williams. Of all the people I researched before visiting New England, Roger Williams was the most interesting and the one I wanted to learn more about. Much of our national position relative to religion we have Williams to thank. While Williams went on to found the Baptist Church in America, he was adamant that Rhode Island be a religious haven with no state religion. One of my favorite pictures of the trip is the National Memorial building on one side of the street with the Episcopal Cathedral on the other, representing the Anglican church he fought to separate from. However, unlike everywhere else in New England, Williams did not oppose other churches from coming to Rhode Island, even the Anglican Church. If you visit Rhode Island, take the time to learn about Roger Williams and take the time to visit this National Memorial.
