A treasure trove of history and knowledge of the mining industry in Cumbria
Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum的点评
点评:Went with my dad who is a huge mining enthusiast but we had never visited the museum before. Ok so if your experience of museums is nationally funded huge city museums with millions of visitors a year then I would reset your expectations. Do consider this museum on its own merits and not in comparison. Isn’t it fantastic that some very clever, knowledgable and passionate people want to preserve the history and memories of this important industry that shaped the county. The location is beautiful, the museum is packed full of such carefully detailed information and a huge collection of photos not only on the history of Threlkeld quarry but all mining and quarries in Cumbria. Info on mining and quarry workings and of course all the many fascinating rocks and minerals that make up the geology of the county.
The train ride was great, my dad and I enjoyed it and was lovely to have the volunteer guides explain the history of the museum and the collections and do a Q&A.
Clearly this lovely little museum is a labour of love for the volunteers and is underfunded. If you want to know more about local geology and the history of mining industry this is the place to come.
