点评:A lovely reserve with wonderful reed bed and woodland birds and wildlife.
We have visited many times over the years and this time we were fortunate enough to find the ring necked duck, jack snipe and the star attraction : Bittern. Although we heard booming calls all over the reserve we didn’t think we would actually get to see one of these special and very secretive birds. However at the end of the day we had a six minute long sighting of a Bittern from the Causeway Hide. Excellent views via spotting scope.
The visitor centre is manned by helpful and friendly staff. Sadly the cafe has had to adapt to changing times and no longer sells freshly made food prepared on the premises from local suppliers. Like many RSPB reserves they have switched to a simple menu. There are warm pies and pasties, prepacked bacon baps, prepacked sandwiches and a rather thin but hot soup. There were also sealed tubs of macaroni cheese etc. Most items can be warmed up, but this service stops at 2:30 pm. The soup is served in a cardboard tub and drinks are served in cardboard cups. I felt that the prices were rather high but I’m aware that some reserves have had to shut cafes due to lack of volunteers, so I was just grateful to be able to have some warm food on a cold day.
