点评:I was so fortunate to find this hidden treasure tucked in one of the relatively quiet side streets of busy Chinatown. The 19th century synagogue is painstakingly restored and literally saved from complete destruction. The prayer hall is stunning - the chandeliers, the stained glass windows, the ark…everything transports a visitor back to the 19th century and the old world of New York Jewish community.
One of the most remarkable highlights for me was surprisingly modern: it was the rose window above the ark in the synagogue’s main sanctuary created by marvelous artist, Kiki Smith. It is such a beautiful and meaningful connection between the old and the new.
Highly recommended to visit the Museum at Eldridge Street to everyone who loves and cherishes Jewish history. You don’t have to be Jewish or religious to enjoy this true gem.
