点评:YaYa and her husband Timothy are the sweetest guides you can possibly imagine.
We took a chance on her polite hustle after arriving in Sapa at 5am on the sleeper bus from Hanoi. In a very kind unassuming way, she asked us of our plans and if we wanted to go on a trek to Tà Van village.
Despite only meeting her for a couple of sleep deprived minutes, we felt very quickly that we could trust her. She gave us her WhatsApp and we agreed to a little plan. Her English is pretty good and she answered all our naive questions before we committed to the trek.
Unfortunately we couldn’t take up her offer of a full homestay overnight in her hometown Hmong village. But the Rice field valley trek was doable in 4 hours with the option to extend or cut short whenever we needed. She asked for $35 which also included lunch and a 30min scooter ride back to Sapa. Much cheaper than any hotel package. She met us at 9am and we walked from Sapa through incredible view after incredible view. Bamboo ravines, stunning rice fields, roaming buffalo. We were joined on our trek by another couple of lovely Hmong ladies. A 54 year old tiny legend carrying a heavy basket…and another younger mom and her baby. It has rained heavily the morning we arrived so the paths were quite slippy and muddy, which to be honest only actually added to the fun. We had such a laugh with the three of them…we knew we would likely be expected to buy a few local souvenirs off them, but it felt only fair after they helped us keep our balance and navigate some of the paths. We were travelling in mid October, and Sapa is a bit cooler than Hanoi. 17c-20c and quite a misty rainy place. I would advise doing it in trainers, grippy walking sandals or wellies (bought from town). If it has rained you WILL get your feet very muddy.
There’s no real way of avoiding it. But like I said, just give into it and you’ll have a really funny time. Saw a few tourists slip on their arse. Everyone was laughing. Don’t be precious and you’ll have the best time. It was the highlight of our whole holiday.
The scenery is on another level. There were other trekking parties en route, so we didn’t feel isolated or unsure of our route at any point.
The lunch stop was lovely, beautiful crispy fried rice and afterwards YaYa took us to a local centre where we saw the indigo plant fabric dying process and corn and rice milling. Also had a little go on a Hmong flute.
Her husband and his friend picked us up about 3pm from Tà Van village and took us directly back to the hotel.
They are so warm and accommodating. We had a morning free the following day so we asked YaYa if her husband Timothy could take us to see the Love and Silver Waterfalls. For $30 him and his brother gave us motorbike backies up the mountain to see them, stopping at various view points and walking up paths to get a better view. The whole thing took about 2 hours.
We felt totally safe and relaxed with them driving. Anyone who’s travelled in Vietnam will know the roads are quite chaotic, but I could tell they were taking extra care and going slower than usual to make us feel safe.
Honestly, don’t even hesitate booking or getting in touch with YaYa. She totally made our trip to Sapa worth it. Really enjoyed talking to both of them during our time together. They’re very thoughtful with sharing local knowledge and also naturally curious and funny in conversation. We felt very relaxed and totally at ease the whole time.
Easiest 5 stars I’ve ever given. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
P.S. She also wears the coolest outfits. Wish she could be our personal stylist.
