恐龙湾自然保护区的点评
点评：Getting a ticket to visit this nature preserve felt like winning the lottery. Slots open up (online) two days ahead at precisely 7:00 am HST. Each 20 minute slot is roughly 35 tickets and judging by their website, they frequently are sold out in just a few minutes. Not Taylor swift fast, but pretty quick. Cost is $25 per person (aged 13+, 12 and under are free).
We got 2 slots for 10:40. The website is pretty emphatic about being on time and getting in line at least 15 prior to our slot. There’s a big parking lot ($3 cash only) but no guarantee of a space. We arrived around 10, afraid of being late and got a space without difficulty although the lot was mostly full. Since we were early we sat in the car for a while then moseyed over toward the entrance around 10:15.
The friendly guy at the entrance checked tickets and photo IDs then ushered us into line early-which seemed to be the norm as the folks behind us had 12:20. I think they are just trying to space people out and if you are there early they might just send you in.
To get down to the beach it’s either a 5 min downhill easy walk on a sidewalk or take the free courtesy shuttle (18 at a time).
The bay is big and there’s concessions, bathrooms and lifeguards with plenty of golden sand to spread out on. We were there at low tide (not ideal) as the large reef is very close to the surface.
The snorkeling was ok, certainly not the best in Hawaii or Oahu. There are some big fish but due to the cacophony of inexperienced/first-time snorkelers dashing about, it wasn’t my favorite. We spent about an hour here before leaving.
