点评:The National Gallery is always worth a visit. It’s free to enter so you can spend as much or as little time as you like here.
We were on limited time this visit so the top 5 highlights were:
i) Jackson Pollock’s ‘Blue Poles’ which scandalised the Australian public at the time because the Australian government paid a record $1.3 million for the abstract work. It’s now estimated to be worth a whopping $500+ million.
ii) the Sidney Nolan Ned Kelly series tells the story of the bushranger Ned Kelly, his gang, and their run-ins with the police across 26 paintings.
iii) The Aboriginal Memorial - an entire room dedicated to 200 Indigenous hollow log coffins.
iv) Lindy Lee's stunning new work, ’Ouroboros’, which is outside, at the front of the gallery
v) The Sculpture Garden is hidden away at the back of the gallery but it is surprisingly large. Although several of its pieces are closed while they undergo restoration, it is still worth seeking out.
