点评:The Tuhura Otago Museum has many different exhibits. In the Nature Galleries, they show the animals and plants that live in the region, such as the Northern royal albatross. These are huge birds with a wingspan of 3.3 m/11 ft. The Giant Moa is the largest bird that ever lived.
Their exhibit "Southern Land, Southern People" is their flagship exhibit. It opened in 2002. One side features the natural history of the region and the other side focuses on the human history. At the entrance to the exhibit, there is a Maori who is dressed for overland travel 400 years ago. Other exhibits focused on the industries that drew humans to settle in the area, such as raising sheep and gold mining.
They had a nice exhibit of Pacific cultures. In the Animal Attic, you can see how animals were exhibited in the 19th century. There also was a temporary exhibition titled "The Six Yards Sisterhood: Deconstructing the Sari in Aotearoa".
Of course there is an exhibit on the Tangata Whenua (the people of the land), as the Maori refer to themselves. It included impressive carvings from a carved meeting house dating back to the 1870s. In total, I spent 3.5 hours enjoying this museum.
