Monastery dedicated to the patron saint of Greece
Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas Anapafsas at Meteora的点评
点评:We joined a day tour from Athens in December 2024, to Meteora.
The Monastery of St Nicholas Anapausas (also spelled as “Anapafsas”) was the first, out of 3, monasteries that we’d visited that day. It is also the first monastery you will see when you approach Meteora from Kastraki Village.
(Note: St Nicholas is the patron saint of Greece and the protector of sailors and seamen.)
The origin of the name Anapausas or Anapafsas is not known. It probably refers to the name of one of the early founders of the monastery. Another interpretation is that the name was derived from the verb “anapavomai”, which means “to rest”. The name therefore suggests that it’s a place for monks and visitors to rest their weary body and mind.
Of particular interest here is the frescoes that decorates the little church of the monastery. They are the oldest known signed works of famous Cretan painter, Theophanes Strelitzas, in 1527 (who was probably a monk at that time).
Theophanes used to write his monogram Ch.M on the lower part of his paintings. The frescoes bear all the special features of his unique art: delicacy, vividness and bright colours. They are one of the most important sets of post-Byzantine art.
Fun fact: Above the entrance to the church is an inscription that says “hand of the monk Theophanes of Crete Strelitzas”. His exquisite murals are considered the best in Meteora.
One of the interesting paintings on the West Wall of the church which caught my attention was Adam giving names to animals and birds (known as “Adam in paradise”):
“So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.” (Genesis 2:20)
There are a lot of steps to climb to get to these monasteries. The reward for reaching the top is the captivating views from the viewing platform at the top. If you walk to the highest part of the rock you will see the bell tower. The view was just stunning.
We were really lucky that day as the weather was perfect: blue sky, no rain, and the weather was cool.
