点评:This is a wonderful half day out. The boat trip is idyllic and the tour of the island really informative and uplifting. The orangutans have the run of the whole island and it is us visitors who remain in a caged tunnel, allowing those animals who are brave enough to come up close to inspect us! And there are several of those - while the aim of the project is to rehabilitate orangutans and enable them to be sent off to live in the wild, some have had experiences that mean this is never going to be possible, and these will live their lives out happily on the island. Every orangutan has a name and a back story, and some stories are very emotional.
As well as learning so much about orangutans, we were also told how difficult it had been trying to keep things going, firstly during Covid and later after a fire demolished the admin block. But volunteers have helped with the rebuild and the place is now immaculate. It is superbly run. Little financial help is seemingly available locally and so donations from the public are desperately needed. Be warned - although you can buy small items in the shop using credit cards, you can only donate with cash, so come well armed with notes and help this amazing project!
