Helpful tips for riding Shinkansen with access to oversized baggage/luggage area

点评：Very smooth experience riding the Shinkansen from Tokyo - Kyoto and back. It was a little confusing when booking tickets specially when incorporating oversized baggage area, so I thought I'll pen down my experience so others can potentially benefit.
- We were a family of 4, traveling with 3 suitcases that were 28" each (check-in luggage, larger than carry on)
- Technically, as per Shinkansen guidelines, up to 30" suitcases can fit in the overhead space, but if it's heavy, lifting it up and bringing it down from the overhead space is a challenge, so better to book seats with oversized baggage area.
- Seats with oversized baggage area / compartment tend to be the first and last rows in each car. So were were in row 18 going one-way, and in row 1 on the return. The oversize luggage area was right behind us. Very convenient. If you don't book seats with oversized baggage area, you have no choice but to fit luggage in overhead space, or cram it in front of your knees. Note there is NO extra charge for booking oversized baggage area!
- Now, when I searched for 4 tickets with access to overhead baggage area, my choices seemed to be extremely limited. This is because the system assumes that you need oversized baggage access for all 4 seats! So here's what I had to do - run a search first for regular tickets without oversized baggage. This showed me which car had seats available that were together. I made a note of the car number and seat numbers. Then, I first booked 2 seats with oversized baggage area in this car, and subsequently booked 2 regular seats right next to them. All 4 tickets showed up in my app as separate reservations. No issues at all with the reservation.
