点评：The Santa Croce square is a historic square of Florence where the calcio - an ancient form of football - was played till the 18th century.
The square dates from the earliest settlements on the river of the Arno, and was elevated to the place of the jousts and festivities during the Renaissance. The palaces on the square are quite remarkable - especially the Antella palace with the facade entirely decorated with allegorical frescos, but most of the buildings date back from the 15th century.
At the end of the square is the church of the same name dominating with its large marbled facade.
The square is quite wide, and has many restaurants and terraces as well as a monument to Dante. The square being so close to the river was heavily impacted by the floodings of 1966, and several plaques commemorate this sad event.
