点评:I visited on the Sunday of the month when it's meant to be free and my main aim was to see the refurbished gallery about Macedonian prehistory, only to find out that it's closed. I spoke to the man at the ticket office about it trying to understand why it was closed and when it would be open but he was of no help at all.
He said that it has nothing to do with the fact that it was free entry on the day but that he didn't know when the gallery would be "available" because he is not responsible for its opening. He then told me to come back the next day; to call before I visit; to speak to the manager, etc. It all sounded very random, shy of responsibility and unprofessional. The museum is not that big so randomly closing a section of it while charging the full price for entry just doesn't sound good. It all sounded totally disorganised and amateurish.
Apart from tourists, there were coachfuls of students arriving, so closing the prehistory gallery on a Sunday and that when it's free entry means that large numbers of people are ultimately prevented from learning about the prehistory of Macedonia. So, why does this museum want to do that? Food for thought.
The part that was open did contain some prehistoric exhibits but I was hoping to see more. The rest of the museum has great displays, including loads of gold but if you have been to the museums at Pella and Vergina, this here can feel a bit repetitive and underwhelming.
I could see that other people also wanted to enter the prehistory gallery, which was cordoned off without any explanation whatsoever. I hope that someone in the right department is reading this and will hold the management of the museum accountable for this situation. The management's ability to run this museum should be re-examined. Some of the staff were just hanging out with each other gossiping btw painting an even more unprofessional picture.
