点评:The Cattedrale di San Giorgio has finally opened its doors after several years of heavy restoration work. The interior looks wonderful, but there is a huge net under the ceiling to protect the public from falling stones. This net had been there 15 years ago and it is still there now. Everything else inside has been masterfully restored.
The Cathedral had been consecrated in 1177, but completely restored in the 18th century after the devastating fire; hence the chapels were rebuilt in opulent Baroque style. The altar needs to be lighted, but it’s not a problem because it is frequently being done for visiting school groups.
I had 30 minutes to spend in the Cattedrale before the afternoon closing and it was enough time to enjoy it. Sadly, the exterior of the Cattedrale is still undergoing renovations, and it is the exterior that makes the building so gorgeous, not the interior. I was very lucky to see it in the past.
