点评:Hell's Museum is a must-see for anyone wanting to go beyond the malls and reclaimed Marina Bay Sands/Sentosa areas of Singapore. The unique insights into the culture and history available now thanks to the surviving Tiger Balm estate absolutely are an education, but there is a catch. We were lucky to be there on a Tuesday around noon, bought museum tickets (used cash) and walked in in time for a free tour (1215pm) from one of the volunteers, Tan Wee Lin (rough spelling). While there is an intro video, and lots of signage, her tour was the difference between "would you look at that" and "this place (Hell's Museum/Haw Par Villa/Singapore) is amazing."
Be sure to go to Hell's Museum first, before the rest of the park area as the context and details of the construction, evolving purpose and subsequent history of Haw Par Villa and the Hell's museum area is key to getting something lasting out of the visit. The illustration and explanation of Singapore's current burial customs (and regulations) as necessarily adapted from what was conducted before the 1960's alone, is worth the visit.
And be aware, some generations of Singapore citizens were taken to Hell's Museum as children with regularity and with severe foreboding (and a claustrophobic passage that has since been removed), and frankly do not want to return there. Younger generations haven't been compelled to visit at all, and so, with land so precious (Hell's Museum was once converted to a canal ride-based theme park, and the greater park spent time as a concert venue), the ability to visit this unique cultural landmark (which draws on much of Southeast Asia for its influences) may disappear like an endangered species.
If you are interested in visiting the Hawker centres and areas like Chinatown, make the Hell's Museum and Haw Par Villa your next destinations. (But be sure to get a tour guide!)
