点评:We visited Porto Santo and played golf as a couple on the 18th of March 2025. This was part of a golf holiday to Madeira. We had originally planned to play on the 17th of March but the ferry trip was cancelled because of wind and “high seas“ so what we ended up doing was bringing Palheiro golf course forward from the Tuesday to the Monday and planning Porto Santo on the Tuesday. (18h).
Palheiro were very accommodating and it was extremely easy to swap the teetime from Tuesday to Monday. And I have to say it was very easy dealing with Porto Santo line. We did it all through WhatsApp, and they were able to cancel the tickets for the Monday and reassign them to the Tuesday. I think if we had been unable to go at all we could’ve obtained a refund via email. The pick up from outside our hotel to the ferry terminal in Funchal was absolutely fine. We got picked up at 07:21 hours for an 8 o’clock ferry time. The bus arrived exactly at that time. The ferry trip over was very straightforward and we were met at Porto Santo and taken to the golf course. So far so good. We were the only people on the ferry going to the golf course. I had rather naïvely expected that it would’ve been quite an empty golf course and it would’ve been millionaires Golf. Unfortunately not. We arrived and discovered that there are direct flights to Porto Santo from Denmark and possibly other Nordic countries. We were told at arrival that we could tee off more or less straight away. (Because I suppose we had to get the ferry back.) We probably arrived on the first tee at about 1110. Unfortunately, there was a group of 80 Danish golfers. They must’ve been in a group with a handicap limit of 36.(And by this I mean that the minimum handicap was 36, anything lower wouldn’t have been allowed on the holiday.) They were quite insistent that we had to wait until they had all teed off and bullied the starterl as well as their holiday rep and we were told to come back at 11:50. I suppose it gave me the opportunity to hone my game on the driving range. anyway, we went back to the first tee at 11:50 and probably got to tee off at about 1205. as a two ball amongst four balls. (It reminded me of turning up at Lykia links in Turkey where they had about eight people for each teetime.)
The course is a Severiano Ballesteros design. I have to say it’s a very good golf course but not at all easy. You have to be extremely straight, there’s quite a lot of run on the ball so if you’re a bit left or a bit right, it will certainly run off. The front nine goes down from the clubhouse and works its way back. The fifth hole is classic Ballesteros. We were playing off the front tees so it’s only about 120 yards but it’s into at least a three club wind with water in front of the green, a bunker behind the green and basically nowhere to miss it. What it must be like off the white tee which is about 175 yards! it would take a great shot not to lose your ball. Anyway, after two and three-quarter hours we arrived on the 10th tee. The 10th is a hell of a golf hole You drive over water to effectively an island fairway. The fairway narrows the further you go. You then have to hit across more water to the continuation of the fairway which is on the right hand side. a bit left you’re in the water, a bit right there’s a hazard area and then some bunkers. If you’ve managed all of this, you’ll have a short iron into the green guarded on the left by more water.
11 again is a drive guarded by water on the left and you have to hit over water to the Green although this is only a short par four and probably just requires a hybrid and a short iron. 12 is a uphill par five and then it gets even more spectacular. 13 is a par three which looks a bit like the seventh at Rye but unfortunately has the ocean on the right and beyond. 14 is a dog leg to a green perched up high with death to anything right We didn’t get to play 15 which look like another extremely challenging par three because by now we were seriously running out of time, having to get the taxi back to the ferry and actually managed to play through four groups in the last five holes. And, to be fair, the Danish group were quite accommodating in allowing us to do that. The 18th is a par five with a quite big pond in front of the green.
we were then picked up at 5 o’clock, taken back to the ferry and returned back to Funchal. It’s a long day out. It’s quite good fun because you feel like you’re going somewhere even more remote to play golf. The course is a tremendous challenge. It’s got a very linksy feel about it but the greens were in excellent condition and you couldn’t really fault the condition of the course. It may well be that they’re putting too many people out on the golf course and thus you end up with five or six hour rounds. That is what would stop me from coming back.
I know this reads better than a three star review. It’s probably five star for the potential of the golf course and the feeling of playing golf at the edge of the world but only one and a half star for the amount of annoyance I felt at spending so long on a golf course. If you were a four? Maybe that would be better, but it’s so popular with direct flights from northern Europe that I don’t think you’re ever going to get a quick round. Compare that with Palheiro golf course that we played yesterday, we were in a buggy playing a two ball. We teed off at 9:30 and were finished by 1230.
