Riverside Park and Ralph Mitchell Zoo的点评
点评：As a longtime resident of Independence, this zoo's never been perfect, but I do have tons of fond memories. There's not much here in the way of animals, but that's been improving slowly over the last few years. An especially fun addition has been improvements to the reptile house, as we've added a dumeril's boa, a ball python, veiled chameleon, western hognose, bearded dragon, and two toed sloth. We've also recently acquired a great horned owl. The main star of the zoo is Monkey Island, an island featuring white faced capuchins (formerly rhesus monkeys) it was actually the birthplace of Miss Albe, the first monkey in space. There's ton of great history here at the park and I'm glad there's some new displays to draw attention that. We recently did restoration work on Sante Fe engine 1050, a 2-6-2 prairie style steam locomotive built by Baldwin Locomotive back in 1898, that was previously rusting to bits but is now shining like new. The park is also home to the 1964 Chicago World's Fair life sized Corythosaurus dinosaur from Sinclair's Dinoland Pavillion exhibit, one of nine life sized dinosaurs from said fair spread throughout the US. The park also features a miniature train ride that's been here since 1957, a miniature EMD F7 styled after the "Super Chief" Sante Fe locomotive, there is also a mini-golf course next to the train ride and a vintage style carousel that was built in 1950. The park features several playground activities, trails, recreational picnic seating, historic buildings, an amphitheatre, and more. A hidden gem is a drive through section of the zoo that features larger animals such as plains bison, elk, llamas, and whitetail deer.
