The only recognisable Carmarthen Roman remains to survive above ground

点评：Carmarthen claims to be the oldest town in Wales and the Romans built a fort and amphitheatre here around 75AD. The remains of the amphitheatre are the only bit of Roman Carmarthen still to be seen above ground.
They about 20 minute walk to the north west of the town centre, behind a grassy bank along Priory Street (A484). They are marked by a small sign and a path leads up the grassy bank to the remains. behind.
The amphitheatre was first identified in 1944 when the Caermarthen borough undertook a survey for a new housing in the area. He suggested a hollow on the land might be the remains of an amphitheatre and the area was protected from development. Archaeological excavations in 1968 and 1970 revealed a wall around the arena area and evidence of seating banks.
It is one of only four amphitheatres in Wales, so from that point of view, it is worth visiting, but don't expect to see a lot. (Caerleon, near Newport is much better!).
