点评：There may be more enjoyable experiences than sitting on a bench under a copse of trees in Galena's Grant Park on a hot summer day with a cool breeze blowing in your face, watching kayakers paddling on the Galena River below and getting a picture postcard view of Galena on the other side. But I can't think of one at the moment. Located at 625 Park Avenue, Grant Park was founded in 1890 after citizens of Galena decided that the town's most famous citizen, U.S. Grant, should be honored. A site needed to be cleared of existing houses and about 19,000 cubic yards of dirt were moved to created the gradual slopes seen in the park today. A bronze statue of Grant and a fountain were the first structures to be installed. Today, the beautifully landscaped park includes a gazebo, pavilion, pergola, the original fountain, the original statue of Grant, a basketball court, playground, picnic area and several Civil War and World War II cannons. In the wake of a $232,000 renovation, the jewel of the park is the oval garden with urns filled with mums, a newly constructed limestone retaining wall, a reconstructed sidewalk, newly planted trees and a monument in the middle with plaques recognizing the major donors.
