No need for a guided tour if you're adventurous

点评：The guided tours I saw tho San Antonio Arrazola included Monte Alban -- which is on the way here from Oaxaca. I'd already been there. A Google map showed that this place is small. So I took a cab.
It is easy to get around on foot. I asked the driver to drop me at El Tallador de Sueños. It has a little museum and was a great introduction -- but it didn't have the simple charm of other places I visited west of the main street. I really enjoyed talking with the artists. (I don't know if any of them speak English.)
The main street was more "touristy". One place I avoided was HUGE, covered with murals; it had room after room filled with sections of similar alebrijes. You could go there if you want a big selection and have little time... I preferred buying from simpler places, especially if I was talking with the artist. There was also a mercadito, a small market with maybe ten places, that was a nice alternative to the huge store.
Colectivos leave every 15 minutes or so for Oaxaca, they told me. The ride cost only 15 pesos, but there was no room for my alebrijes, except on my lap, because six people were crammed into a small car. I'm guessing you can catch your own cab back to your hotel; I'm sure artists can tell you how, or you might wait near where the highway enters town and flag one down. My alebrijes were only wrapped in heavy paper, so take care with yours!
One artist told me that two other places around Oaxaca also make alebrijes. But Arrazola was plenty for me.
