just a word of caution for female tourists

点评：I have thought long and hard about leaving this review for over six months. I decided to speak up because my friends have pointed out that it needs to be said plainly in order for it to not be ignored if it is indeed an issue. The tour at this place is good and informative - it is a very good tour no doubt about that. However, there is a tour guide who is also known as a pastor- which warrants this review even more - let’s just say, girls, be careful of him. Under the pretense of hospitality and Filipino friendliness, he tries to make advances on girls. (Yes, he is very helpful and knowledgable but what needs to be addressed should be addressed.) My friends (male and female who own a tour agency in Philippines and are veterans in the Philippines tourism and hospitality industry) have confirmed that this is not typical Filipino friendliness but using it as an excuse. (I have not included his name in this review as my Filipino friend has said to give him at least some face and second chance. Hopefully he will appreciate and change his ways.) We tried to turn down his invitation for dinner after our tour but he was very insistent and so we had no choice but to accept as we thought it is considered rude for the culture. However, we soon found out he tries to find out more about us girls and asks very personal questions that make us uncomfortable. On the pretense of protecting us from traffic on the road, he is also rather touchy. The tour itself at culion is very good and he is very knowledgeable. However, just make sure to keep a distance from him, even on phone cos he constantly tries to “follow up” with you regarding your vacation- asking for photos of you. My friend also felt stalked by him on Facebook and blocked him. I also on WhatsApp because it was too creepy. Just thought to voice this out as he did smirk to himself and vocalise that other young girls were avoiding him when we came across them in public following dinner. Leads me to believe that other local Coron/Culion girls also are wary of him. I would still recommend visiting culion and the museum. But if possible, maybe choose and request for a different tour guide. There was a tour guide in the Museum who wore spectacles and older gentleman. He is a bit of a stammer and nervous when giving us a brief presentation in the museum air con video hall but I would suggest choose him as your guide instead of the tour guide who is also a pastor. Sorry for writing this review but just doing it for the safety of other unsuspecting girls who decide to join this tour to discover Culion. Am also not an advocate for condoning such behaviour, especially if one is a religious leader in a position of authority where such actions and behaviour prevails without accountability. (The disclaimer I want to mention is that Culion Museum and Archives probably does not know about this guide's behaviour and is most likely unaware as the guide is very good at keeping up an image. So I hope my review does not affect Culion's tourism, but just that it serves as a heads up for other tourists who plan on visiting to just be careful especially if you are a young female.)
