点评:Sherborne Abbey is an absolute gem - steeped in history, with breathtaking architecture and stunning stained glass windows. The vaulted ceiling is particularly cool. It’s well worth a visit to soak in the peaceful surroundings. Free to enter too!
However, the setting is unfortunately marred by modern intrusions. The Abbey Close, which should be a serene and historic space, is constantly disrupted by cars driving around it as there seem to be no restrictions stopping anyone accessing it. My daughter was beeped at while she tried to take a photo of the wrought-iron gates to the Abbey! Oddly, dogs and cycles are banned from the Abbey Close but 2-ton cars are fine.
Even more surprising is a car park located just yards from the 1,000-year-old west wall. Looking at old photos of the Abbey in the library, the parking seems to be located on a graveyard. It’s a real shame that such a remarkable site isn’t given the respect it deserves.
If you can overlook the traffic, the Abbey itself is magnificent - but it would be even better if the area around it was more pedestrian-friendly.
