点评：This is the accurate translation from Russian of that enormous artificial water artery spanning 227 km.
We drove over it in early September on our way from Kargopol to Petrozavodsk. That was the southernmost point of it, where it meets Lake Onega.
It hurts any time I even think about that waterway, so the moment I saw it my heart really palpitated. When building it using just primitive instruments (spades, pickaxes, wheelbarrows, etc.), 25,000 Gulag convicts had lost their lives. No construction machinery was used.
The crossing was quiet and serene that day. Not a lot of cars on the bridge. Still, we couldn't but pull up next to the canal to pay tribute to its victims at the adjacent church.
