点评:A very short walk from Portland Bill Lighthouse is the Trinity House Obelisk - a 7 metre high stone obelisk that acted as a warning to ships about the vast rock shelf that juts out 30 metres into the sea. In effect, it is a lighthouse minus the light!
The Obelisk was "built." I suppose built is the wrong word - it is basically a large piece of shaped Portland Stone) in 1844, and this is engraved on the obelisk itself.
We're lucky this obelisk is still here - in 2002, Trinity House (the official authority for Lighthouses in England and Wales) deemed it too expensive to maintain and it was set for demolition. Quite how much maintenance a large block of stone requires, save for the occasional jet-wash, is anyone's guess.
Mercifully, the obelisk was saved and has remained as an important part of Portland Bill
