A shocking disappointment

点评：I hadn't been to visit Bath in some years and was really shocked by the state it's in. This World Heritage Site looks quite stunning from a distance, but possesses a really gritty urban feel these days. It's a major tourist trap of the worst kind. The standard price for entry to the Roman Baths is about £25.00. How is this justifiable? It might be worth paying that much, however, to escape the decay of this central part of the city, spattered with grafitti, pigeon droppings, homeless people sleeping in doorways, boarded-up listed buildings, loud buskers at every turn, screeching gulls, drunks with their loose dogs sniffing around drains, litter, tacky retail and restaurants and cafes spilling out onto pavements everywhere... In addition, I visited on a day when many thousands more people were attending a half-marathon, with its plethora of metal barriers, traffic cones and parking nightmares. Why does the city invite so much extra activity, which seems to have destroyed its uniqueness? It was such an unpleasant experience, I doubt I'll ever return. The UK seems a broken country if it can't take better care of its heritage sites and has to sell its soul to attract increasing numbers of visitors to spend, baby, spend.
