点评:A revelatory experience on the bus as the Leeds urban sprawl gives way to a rural green space and the picturesque Kirkstall Abbey! Smashing, 12th century, Cistercian ancient monument, painted by both Turner and Cotman, pretty well preserved with 13th/14th & 15th century additions...I got there early (opens 10am - Tue - Sun) I'm glad I did, it's a massive site and exploring virtually on my own, it was atmosphericly Gothic, enhanced by the shadows and flocks of Rooks and Blackbirds living there....loved the massive Church building, the tiny library and the deep original drains that criss cross the ruin, the monks had an austere life here....info signs around the place, QR codes if you're into all that...Negative points...It felt a little bit unloved...it's owned by the council and the crumbling picnic tables, dusty models, dirty plastic toys and quite a bit of litter (along with the unappealing Gents loos)...gave a feeling of neglect you don't really see at National Trust/English Heritage properties.
£6.20 to get in, small gift shop and expensive coffee shop (£4 Flat White!!!) 15-20 min bus journey from Leeds City bus station (Nos 33/34) Stand 17, though there are a couple of other services to the Abbey...cultural morning out, followed by shopping and lunch in Leeds!
