点评:We (mum and dad, 30s, grandad, 70+ and disabled, and son, 6) visited the Harewood Christmas event and had a wonderful time. As many readers may know, each Christmas the house is dressed up and a themed self-tour established. This year, the idea was that the Christmas items - baubles, dessert plates, statues - had all come to life and were discussing the trials and tribulations of Christmas. Alongside this, some cheeky angels had escaped from the tree and were running riot through the house. The decorations and audio visual effects were just stunning, and suited kids and adults equally. Our son’s favourite were the baubles practising Christmas songs; my favourite room was the room with relaxing music and “live” paintings of flowers blooming. Just beautiful. I will say that thematically, there’s perhaps a bit too much going on, and if you’re looking to follow the story of the escaped angels getting up to mischief, which is how the event is advertised, then you might find it a little confusing and inconsistent to follow. The disabled access was good, for a house of this size, considering it wasn’t built for walking frames and wheelchairs, and there were obvious concessions made to ensure disabled visitors could experience everything. The electric shuttle is also very much appreciated. The site is hilly and those with mobility issues would certainly struggle. The playground is going through a process of rejuvenation, so is looking a little tired at the moment, but it promises to be excellent when completed. The Courtyard Cafe was the big letdown of the day. Lovely drinks and cakes, but if you’re wanting lunch - even something as simple as a sandwich - bring it yourself. The prices are VERY high, the quality is poor, and the service slow, chaotic and slapdash. Over our few recent visits (we are members, so try to make as much of the tickets as we can) we’ve had to return food, we’ve been doubled charged for items (which could only be solved by writing a formal email of complaint), forgotten about altogether, received the wrong orders…bring a picnic and eat it at one of the plentiful picnic benches while the kids run riot on the playground, I’d say. Lovely lakeside walk and the ferry is great when it’s running (weekends and school holidays only). The walled garden is also spectacular. As always, generally excellent, a slight disappointment in other areas.
