点评:Mulu Pinnacles is a great choice for year-end activity to test mental and physical endurance. It is also a superb location to intimately immerse with nature with zero connection to internet/telephone coverage.
We went to Mulu for work with no obligation to scale the Pinnacles. But we then unanimously decided that we should since we would be at Camp 5 anyway. At the back of my mind, I was not sure if I could reach the summit and I know how difficult the trail is (only managed to reach 900m Gunung Api in 2013). So I went there this time to check on work-related matters and to also see if I could make it this time around to the majestic Pinnacles.
I owe it to our guide, Ronaldo, who was very patient and understanding. He made sure we reached each checkpoint within the cut-off-time, he emphasized only on safety and wanted us to enjoy the climb at our own pace without giving too much pick-me-ups like how guides would usually do (he would crack the silliest jokes and hilarious one-liners once in while that distracted us from the hellish climb).
Some points to highlight: -
- The program starts with 9km walk from Long Litut to Camp 5. There will be zero-network connection. The trails are clear and relatively easy, just muddy in the rainy season. There are leeches, my 2 workmates got bitten minimum once, we saw less than 10 (on their shoes, leech socks etc). None got on me because I guess I was always behind them. Light backpacks and nice trekking shoes are a must. And of course minimum 1.5 litres of water. I wore rubber shoes/Adidas Kampung - they had the best grip on slippery and muddy trails. But not so great on the wooden bridges and rocks - tips: focus and take one step at a time always.
- Camp 5 is basic. You need to bring along fully charged power banks. Good to have camera and phone as separate gadgets. The toilets are clean. Sleeping area also, very comfy for those who are used on adventure activities (mixed and common bed area, no doors so no privacy). Soda or canned drinks available upon request, limited choice. Good to bring your own snacks, energy bars/gels, first-aid kits/personal medication, sarongs, hand fan, rain jacket/disposable poncho, extra socks etc. Mozzy net, blanket, and sleeping bag can be rented at the Park HQ (best to check with the Park minimum two days before your climb). Do bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper
- The inclination is 45-degrees mostly, slippery during rainy season, and on many spots - you'd struggle mentally to plan and make sure how not to fall because there will be tiny spaces for only 1 foot to step on. The trails are all rocks and roots and mud - be prepared to get your shoes/legs/arms stuck. Do No. 1 and 2 before and after the climb in Camp 5, unless you'd like to experience doing them in the jungles during the ascent/descent.
- Stretching before and after the climb: I would sprain my ankles and get sores in my joints easily, so I do stretch pretty religiously throughout the 4d3n trip.
- The whole activity is not for those who are used to: comfy hotel rooms, easy walks in the park, having tonnes of choices for meals.
- The view at the top: insanely beautiful, even more breathtaking than the pictures. Seeing the Pinnacles was a surreal experience - a reward for enduring the difficult climb and multiple attempts to quit along the way.
- If you can, do trek slower during descend and look for red langurs and hornbills (we saw maybe 5 langurs and 2 hornbills)
- The boat-ride back to Mulu town is the best after the long hours of walking and climbing :)
This is a must-do. Be prepared mentally and physically. Even if you can't finish the climb during your first attempt, come back again later and try again. For non-avid climbers like myself, I find it helpful to not think too much about 'reaching the top'. Just focus on each and every step that you take and have fun.
