点评：More than the cathedral the Santa Maria Novella is a truly amazing place to visit.
The facade is decorated as the baptistery and the cathedral, but the entire complex is so vast it will take you hours to visit.
Church founded in 1219 by the Dominican order; they then soon started their pharmacy business which is now still functioning in the Officina in the street behind the church. When in the cloister you will find two windows giving you a view into the shop - which also tells you how big the site actually is stretching over several streets and blocks of houses.
The visit is very big - there is the church of course, then the Spanish chapel which is richly decorated and absolutely stunning showing the Dominican monks fighting heresy. You will visit two cloisters and the cemetery as well as the refectory with frescos by Daddi and a papal chapel used by the popes when they visited Florence. Pope Leo X was a Medici family member - so he visited frequently.
The whole visit is easily 2 hours; it is included in the Firenze Pass and no reservation is needed.
