Very ornate fountain, deserves more than a quick glance
Queen Victoria Fountain的点评
点评:Monday afternoon on the 28th August we were stolling around sightseeing in Dun Laoghaire. We had parked up on Harbour Road near the Royal Saint George Yacht Club.
We saw this fountain at the intersection of Marine Road & Queen's Road and opposite Dun Laoghaire railway station
The fountain was erected in 1900 to commemorate Queen Victoria's visit to Dun Laoghaire, previously called Kingstown from 1821 until 1920 when it got it's current name.
The vivid green fountain stands on a tiled mosaic floor inside a metal structure with eight ornate arches supporting an ornate metal dome and topped with a golden crown.
Each arch has a gold painted shield, two of the shields depict Queen Victoria in profile the others have birds and text. There is an owl on the inside, towards the top of each arch supporting column.
The fountain itself comprises of four basins supported by feet shaped like a lion, each basin has it's individual water spout. It is topped by Pegasus, a winged horse
In 1980 it was vandalised and then suffered more damage in 1981. It was not restored and repaired until 2001.
At the time of our visit there was no water flowing in the fountain, don't think it has for some time.
The amount of detail and the workmanship in the is rather special, deserves more than a quick look.
