A Peaceful Escape to Katsuoji Temple (But Mind the Daruma Drama in December!)

点评：Getting to Katsuoji Temple from Osaka is a bit of a trek, but it’s worth the effort if you’re up for a peaceful day out. First, take the red metro line all the way to Minoh-Kayano Station, the last stop. From there, a direct bus will take you straight to the temple. It’s straightforward, though it does take a fair bit of time.
The temple itself is lovely—spacious, quiet, and surrounded by beautiful scenery. It’s the sort of place where you can wander around, enjoy the calm, and forget about the hustle and bustle for a while. That said, if you’re visiting because you’ve seen those striking photos of thousands of darumas (those little round wish dolls) all piled up, you’ll want to avoid December.
When I visited, they were clearing out almost all the darumas to prepare for the new year. It was a bit disappointing, to be honest. I’d been looking forward to seeing them, but instead, I found mostly empty shelves. I suppose it makes sense—out with the old, in with the new—but it’s something to keep in mind if you’re planning a trip.
All in all, Katsuoji is a beautiful spot and well worth a visit. Just aim for a time outside of December if you’re hoping to see those iconic daruma displays.
