平江路的点评
点评：My last visit to Suzhou, I visited Ping Jiang Road in the afternoon, while it was still a good visit, I found many of the teahouses pretty quiet. Then I was told by one of the hotel staff that I should visit after 7pm, the place literally comes alive. She was right. On this visit, I went at around 9pm, the place felt like it was literally moving...
The easiest and cheapest way to get here will be to take the Suzhou Subway to Xiangmen on Line 1. Take Exit 2 and walk out towards the main road, where you should be able to see Soo Chow University on the other side (huge white buildings behind a fenced area). Turn right and walk along the road until you get to Ping Jiang Road, which will be on your right, next to a river.
Apart from the usual crowds of people walking around, there were many street performers not usually seen during the day. In addition, the teahouses start their 'Pingtan' sessions. Basically, it is normally a duo, one performer will be playing a musical instrument, normally a two-stringed apparatus called an 'erhu'. The other performer will proceed to tell you a story about an ancient folklore hero except that it is sung out like a poetic song.
The entire Ping Jiang Road will be adorned with lights and sounds, quite a treat for the eyes and ears. This is a good place to try out many of the local delicacies and snacks, like, Osmanthus Jelly, Fermented Rice Balls. Try the pan-fried buns, simply mouth watering....
