点评：What an experience! If you're looking for a super swish museum this isn't for you. It's so laid back , slightly well worn, but one of the best examples of recent history in Egypt. The extraordinary wealth on display makes a contrast with the very poor crumbling streets around this "palace". I suppose it once must have faced the sea. King Farouk's family circumstances beggar belief. Diamonds, gold, precious jewels are displayed in a matter of fact way but one of the best sights is the family's bathroom(s).
Can you imagine sitting at your desk to work from a solid gold desk set? What about diamond encrusted egg cups to cradle your boiled egg? It's outrageous and exquisite all at the same time. So now the Government owns this collection which is reputed to be only a fraction of what is actually said to be in existence. I asked if there was some sort of catalogue to be bought but there was nothing. The small shop was closed too. When you step outside and make your way through the grinding poverty it's a real shock. The gold and diamond chess set stays behind, unused by privileged hands, the tiaras lie unworn and the Cartier broaches unpinned to couture gowns.
