点评:We visited the Cathedral of St Rufino, which was the first stop of our Assisi walking tour.
I find the facade of this grand church quite plain compared to the other cathedrals in Italy. But the interior took my breath away.
Designed in 1500 by the great Umbrian architect Galeazzo Alessi, the cathedral’s interior was divided into 3 naves, separated by majestic arches supported by square base columns.
Beautiful artworks, paintings and sculptures adorned the interior of the cathedral.
The key significance of Cathedral of San Rufino is that this was where St Francis, St Clare and some of their early followers were baptised.
The central nave has perspex panels on the floor which allowed the visitors to see the stonework and foundations from an earlier 9th century church and Roman temple ruins.
In the left nave lies the base of a Roman cistern, on which the building rests. The name of the local magistrates who ordered the construction was inscribed on the stone (you can see through a cutaway stone arch).
It was relatively quiet and absolutely peaceful during our visit.
I will recommend a visit to the Cathedral of San Rufino.
