点评:The San Marco museum was without any doubt the highlight of our trip to Florence. More than the large hyped museums, this is where you will get a true sense of how the Renaissance started and kicked off a whole new artistic movement funded by the Medici family.
The museum is an old Dominican monastery founded as early as the 13th century. In 1418 the monks were chased from the place accused of neglection and a disobedient lifestyle. But when Cosimo Medici returned to Florence in 1434 he decided to fund the restoration of the monastery and make it a personal prestige project.
He invited the monk Fra Angelico who lived in the monastery to decorate the 43 cells on the 1st floor, and this is where you will find his amazing Annunciation when ascending the staircase; a replica of the one found in the Prado in Madrid.
The 43 cells are all decorated and visible; each has a different fresco although some themes are very similar - but look closer, and you will see there is always a personal twist. You will also find the cells where Savonarola spent his days before being judged, and Cosimo's personal cell when he needed a retreat from public life.
On the ground floor is a collection of chapels, the cloister, the refectory with a Last Supper by Ghirlandaio etc. Just an endless succession of showcasing how the Renaissance art originated within the religious communities and funded by the Medici.
The visit should absolutely be on your list for Florence - set aside 2 hours to indulge in this serene atmosphere of art. Entrance is included in the Firenze Pass - or on site at 15 EUR; no reservation needed.
