点评:The Beatles Story is an attraction I have always wanted to visit having always enjoyed the music of The Beatles. I don't know if my expectation of the place was higher than it should have been as a result but I ended up feeling a little underwhelmed. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it, I just kind of expected something more somehow?
Having entered the building, the first thing you are herded into is the posing for photos which can be brought for £13+ at the end of the experience. I'm not entirely sure having that as the first thing you come across is entirely the best idea, especially if you are one of the first people in at 10am like we were, having just arrived in from the rain teeming down outside!
The next section is where you are provided with headphones and a electronic 'guide' which talks to you about what you are looking at and the history as you walk around. The guide is very in depth, providing extra info on some areas if you want to hear more but this also meant there were people milling around for much longer in some areas and you had to walk around them. Some of the numbers you had to look for on the exhibits were not always easy to see either so you couldn't correspond with the number on the guide.
I will also say at this point that the staff are very friendly and helpful. A lot of these experience places have uninterested staff who just want to go home but here, the staff seem genuinely happy to be there and also have a passion for the music they are hearing on loop day in, day out. Even the lady at the till in the gift shop was singing along when we paid for our goods!
The walk around has some great things to see and it is interesting to get a taste of what it was like as The Beatles became famous and what happened as the years went on. Some of my favourite parts of the experience were near the end with the separate 'pods' for each Beatle (which included John Lennon's death being reported by wire - very emotional) and also the Imagine room which has the song 'Imagine' playing on loop as you look around, very poignant in today's turbulent world.
At the end of the walk around, you hand back your earphones and electronic guide and you can pick up your photos at this point if you wish to buy them. We chose a single photo and honestly, it is a lovely keepsake of the day even if we did look slightly bedraggled from the rain!
There is then a cafe for refreshments (we didn't stay for that) and then you go up some stairs to an extensive gift shop selling anything and everything Beatles related you could possibly think of! My son was so taken in at this point, he treated himself to some Lennon-style glasses which he wore later in the afternoon and all the way home on the train!
All in all, it is a good way to spend about 90mins to 2 hours and enjoyable if you love The Beatles but I would say it is one of those attractions where once you have done it, there is any reason to go again.
