Excellent place to visit but beware the ticketing system!

点评：Well worth a visit and would have scored 5 but for the pricing/ticketing system, which is flawed, frustrating and expensive. You are compelled to buy a year’s pass to gain admission at a cost of £30 per person, with no discounts for seniors. Yes, this does cover all five “attractions” which comprise the project but we only wanted to visit two (the Palace and the (excellent) Faith Museum) and, in any event, on the day we were there, one (the Spanish Gallery) was closed in any event. One of the stated aims of the project is to attract visitors from outside the region to Bishop Auckland, but such visitors are highly unlikely to gain value from a year’s pass; by way of example, a gentleman next to us in the ticket queue had a year’s pass and had a friend with him who wanted to visit for the day (he was from elsewhere in the UK); he had to (very reluctantly) buy a year’s pass.
The other issue with ticketing is how laborious the process is: luckily, we were in a very short queue but it still took an inordinate amount of time for the staff to issue the passes. Having suffered that, once you get to each attraction, there is another slow process to verify your pass!! Whoever designed this (apparently new for this year) needs to think again as it will deter people.
Fortunately, the Palace and Faith Museum are very good and the volunteer staff are friendly and informative. The Palace cafe is also good.
The Project is clearly important for the town as the main shopping street is a prime example of decay and lack of purpose which blights many small northern towns.
